The City of Vestavia Hills has a Council-Manager form of government. In this form of government, the City Manager serves as the CEO of the City and is responsible for daily operations, and the Council has the role of policy making and considering those actions which require Council approval. The Vestavia Hills City Council has four “places”, and the Mayor presides over the City Council.
The City of Vestavia Hills works in partnership but is a separate entity from the Board of Education and the Chamber of Commerce. Members of the Board of Education, Parks & Recreation Board, and Library Board are selected by the City Council.
From 2012-2015, operationally the City was reorganized such that there are now eight City departments: Finance, City Clerk, Police, Fire, Public Services, Library, Information Technology, and Garage.
