The City of Vestavia Hills hosted an informational seminar on August 7, 2018 to address crimes, particularly financial crimes, which are being committed against our senior citizens. Topics discussed included IRS scams, relatives in distress scams, romantic website scams and other similar scams.
Mayor Ashley Curry organized this event after having numerous conversations with senior citizens that had been victimized by a myriad of telephone or email scams. Further discussions with the Vestavia Hills Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation revealed that the financial crimes targeting seniors in Vestavia Hills is a real and growing problem and that a seminar such as this could raise awareness and prevent future occurrences.
