“New Beginnings” Photography Competition

The City of Vestavia Hills invites you to capture the excitement and beauty of Vestavia Hills Parks & Recreation – however you may interpret it – in a photo submission to a competition celebrating the grand opening of the new Vestavia Hills Civic Center. In addition to cash prizes, winning submissions may be displayed within the new Civic Center or in other City of Vestavia Hills municipal buildings.

Timeframe. All images must have been taken within the Vestavia Hills City limits between January 1, 2018 and the submission deadline of March 10, 2022 at 2:00pm CST. The submission description should include the location and approximate date, e.g. Thuss Farm, Spring 2021.

Subjects. Subjects may be anything which the photographer feels may extol the excitement and beauty of Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation. Compositions showing close up images of children or other vulnerable populations must include a release from the guardian (and subject, where applicable). Click HERE to download the required Photo Release. Images containing nudity or distasteful or offensive images will not be accepted.

Alterations. Photographers are free to make any alterations to enhance or interpret their subjects as long as the final product meets technical specifications (see below).

Interpretation (optional). Photographers may provide a brief paragraph offering interpretation or significance of the image submitted.

Divisions & Prizes. Prizes will be awarded in the following five divisions:
> Professional* – $300
> Amateur – $150
> Student – $50
> Still Life (inanimate objects: parks, streams, etc.) – $50
> Active Life (people, animals, etc.) – $50

*Professional division entrants in need of assistance from the City to facilitate access for unique vantage points may contact Parks and Recreation at 205.978.0153 no later than 15 days prior to the submission deadline; however, no guarantee is made that the requested access may be secured.

Submission Specifications. All entries must be in JPEG format, should not exceed 5MB* and must be submitted electronically. Entries may be submitted online using the form below. Images and required forms may also be submitted in person on an external storage device (USB) to Vestavia Hills City Hall – Administration, 1032 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216. Each entry (limit three per photographer) must be submitted individually; entry forms may not be combined if submitting multiple images. File names should reflect the location of the photo, e.g., Thuss Path.jpg.

Be sure to allow time for submissions to be received; the City is not responsible for submissions not received by the deadline. Entrants having issues submitting electronically should call 205.978.0153 before 2:00pm CST on March 10, 2022.

*A higher resolution image will be required for all winning entries.

Criteria. The primary criterion for all divisions is how well the submitted image(s) reflect the excitement and beauty of Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation. Entries to the Professional division will be judged based on this criteria, as well as the following:
> Should the rule of thirds apply?
> Are there distracting highlights or bright spots?
> Is the depth of field appropriate?
> Is the composition/image too busy; does it have distractions?

Eligibility & Fees. This contest is open to the public. Artists may submit entries in multiple divisions, but no more than three total submissions will be accepted. Submission entry is FREE.

Ownership, Rights & Uses. Any photographs submitted may be used by the City of Vestavia Hills for publication, promotion, any form of advertising or in its education programs. The contestant retains full ownership for any other use. The City may print to its chosen dimensions any of the submitted images to include in its local art gallery; at the City’s option, artists featured in the gallery may place a price on the framed piece (net price will be less the City’s cost for frame and matting). Submissions must be original entries, no other entity may have ownership or rights to the image.

Promotion. Photographers/owners of winning images agree to participate in any promotion, news release or advertising requested by the City of Vestavia Hills.

Judges. The judge’s panel includes highly accomplished photographers George Ritchey, Dr. Steven M. Grunfeld and Lindsay N. Donald, along with Mayor Ashley Curry, City Manager Jeff Downes, Public Works Director Brian Davis and Vestavia Hills Beautification Board member Linda Wood. Click HERE to view judge’s bios.
