Currently, there are not fully functional tornado shelters available for public use in Vestavia Hills, including Cahaba Heights and Liberty Park. There are areas at Liberty Park ballfields and soccer fields that serve as temporary shelter from heavy rain and lighting. Planning is underway to evaluate and improve these areas so that they may meet the current code standards as FEMA rated tornado shelters. Improvements to be evaluated include installation of bathroom facilities, replacement/maintenance of generators and fire monitoring equipment, provision of basic first aid supplies, assurance of ADA accessibility, training of staff to serve as shelter managers and repairs to eliminate leaks.
