Community Groups, Boards & Clubs

C.E.R.T. Emergency Training. Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) is offered to the community by the Vestavia Hills Fire Department. C.E.R.T. training teaches participants how to prepare homes and families for the critical period following a disaster. Classes are typically offered quarterly. Chamber of Commerce. The mission of the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce is to promote and improve the economic, civic, education and general business conditions of its members and the Vestavia Hills community, and to work with other organizations in these endeavors in a non-partisan manner. Civitan Club. The Vestavia Hills Civitan Club is a local volunteer organization that is focused on providing outreach, fundraising and services to meet area needs. For more information, visit https://vestaviacivitan.org.

Flag Foundation. The Flag Foundation sponsors the Vestavia Hills Avenue of Flags, located in the medians along U.S. Highway 31, Columbiana Road, Cahaba Heights business district and Liberty Parkway. The group also assists residents with old flags in need of disposal.

Friends of the Library. Friends of the Library are individuals committed to supporting the Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest through volunteer and monetary supp ort. Garden Club. The Vestavia Garden Club (established 1949) owns the Sibyl Temple monument on U.S. Highway 31 near Shades Crest Road. Members of the Vestavia Garden Club, along with members of the Sibyl Temple Foundation volunteer to maintain the Temple grounds. New members are nominated annually by existing members and most activities take place September through May.

Help the Hills. The Help the Hills Coalition is a community group with a united mission: ending the use and abuse of harmful substances among youth in Vestavia Hills and to promote healthy living. Our partners work together through collaboration among schools, parents, and the community at large to raise awareness of dangerous substances, educate youth on making positive, healthy decisions, and offer resources for parents who are seeking help for their children. Together, the Help the Hills Coalition is working for a drug-free Vestavia Hills. For more information, visit https://www.helpthehills.org.

Historical Society. The Vestavia Hills Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of our City. The Historical Society meets quarterly at the Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest and presents interesting speakers on local and state history and points of interest. Kiwanis Club. The Kiwanis Club of Vestavia Hills is a service club that recently re-launched in Vestavia Hills! Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Interested in joining? Visit https://www.facebook.com/VestaviaKiwanis.

Leadership Vestavia Hills. Persons interested in leadership roles in Vestavia Hills meet to learn about various aspects of the community such as its government, economy and school system. Participants are nominated to apply by existing members and class meets monthly, September through April. For more information, visit www.leadershipvestaviahills.com.

Men’s Garden Club. The Men’s Garden Club keeps the Men’s Garden Corner on Shades Crest Road opposite Sibyl Temple. This small park is open to visitors and includes a short walking path and benches.

Parks and Recreation Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to strengthen the Vestavia Hills community through investments in parks and recreational activities for people of all ages by investing time and resources into community parks, green spaces and the environment. For more information on how to become a member of this Foundation, visit www.vhprf.org.

Parks and Recreation Programs. If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, sports board member, etc. for the various athletic programs offered through Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation, contact the board for the particular sport where you would like to volunteer. (Individual sports boards operate under the governance of the Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation Board.)

Rotary International. Vestavia Hills hosts two of these civic clubs: Rotary Club and Sunrise Rotary Club. Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers in 35,000 clubs and 135 countries who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. Senior Citizens Association. This group of Vestavia Hills senior citizens meets monthly for lunch and entertainment, typically the second Monday of each month at 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Ruby Denson at 205.822.8788.

Senior Transportation. Volunteer drivers use a City car to take Vestavia Hills residents to doctor’s offices in the Birmingham area and errands within Vestavia Hills. Volunteers meet every other month to coordinate the driver schedule and usually drive once or twice per month, Tuesday through Friday. Sibyl Temple Foundation. The mission of the Sibyl Temple Foundation is to raise funds to preserve and maintain the Temple and its grounds and facilities. Members of the Sibyl Temple Foundation volunteer alongside the Vestavia Garden Club. Elected Officials & Meetings

Mayor & City Council. The City of Vestavia Hills has a Council-Manager form of government. Members are elected at-large and serve 4-year terms with the Mayor presiding over the City Council. Interested in running for municipal office? City Council Meetings. Regular meetings of the Vestavia Hills City Council are typically held monthly at 6pm on the 2nd and 4th Monday at City Hall. To be added to the agenda distribution email list, contact the City Clerk at rleavings@vhal.org or 205.978.0131.

City Council Work Sessions. Council work sessions are typically held monthly at 6pm on the 3rd Monday at City Hall. The Mayor, City Council and invited presenters meet to gather and discuss information about pending City business prior to action in the regular Council meetings. Work sessions are open to the public, but comment may only be made at the invitation of the Mayor.


City Schools

Board of Education. Vestavia Hills City Schools is renowned for excellence, with its schools, programs and students receiving state and national recognition. Vestavia Hills City Schools is separate from the City government and the Board of Education is its governing body. When there is a vacancy, applications are available at the City Clerk’s office in March with appointments made in April. City Schools Foundation. The Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation (VHCSF) is the fund-raising arm of the Vestavia Hills City Schools system. For more information, visit www.vestaviafoundation.org.
