Board of Zoning Adjustment

The civic engagement of our many volunteer members of City boards and committees are essential to our high quality of life in Vestavia Hills. The purpose of the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) is to hear, review and consider the authorization of variances and special exceptions to the terms of a Zoning ordinance due to special conditions that occur when a literal enforcement of the provision of the ordinance will result in unnecessary hardship. BZA members are appointed by the Mayor to serve a three-year term. Pursuant to Alabama law and by ordinance, the BZA is comprised of five regular members, plus two alternates who may be called by the board chair to serve in the absence of regular members.
