Highway 31 Gateway Beautification & Infrastructure
This project began as a result of the Community Charrette that was held in March 2023 to gather input from community stakeholders regarding redevelopment options at the former Days Inn site, as well as options to improve the aesthetics of the lower U.S. 31 area. Details and documents regarding the original charrette are available at https://vhal.org/highway-31-south.
At the October 13, 2025 meeting of the City Council, the bid from Gillespie Construction was accepted. Click to view the bid documents. The anticipated cost for this project is approximately $1.2 million and includes signage, landscaping and drainage improvements along Highway 31 near the I-65 intersection:
- Stormwater/infrastructure improvements and repairs to properly direct the flow of stormwater to keep it from pooling on the roadway
- Improved median strip on U.S. 31 and on both sides of the highway
- Replacement of existing fencing behind the proposed wall structure
- Improvements to existing “southern temple” structure and grounds
- 15’ tall x 130’ long retaining wall to be installed parallel to Highway 31 North
- Additional (secondary) “Vestavia Hills” sign bearing the city’s name/logo on the opposite side of Highway 31 (near the existing Chevron station)
- Landscaping in the area; work to be performed in conjunction with ALDOT where warranted
Work is anticipated to begin January 2026 with the initial phase (median work, erosion control and clearing and grubbing) complete within 120 days.
