On February 2, 1887, the first Groundhog Day took place in Punxsutawney, PA. The idea for Groundhog Day originated with the Christian celebration of Candlemas, where candles represented how long winter would last. Germans later began a similar tradition using hedgehogs to predict how long winter would last. When Germans settled in Pennsylvania, they switched to groundhogs.
