General Contractors and Sub-Contractors

Any general contractor or sub-contractor must obtain a City business license to conduct business within the City of Vestavia Hills. The card holder is required to be present to obtain a City business license. Employees or representatives will not be issued a City business license. Business license forms must be accompanied by a copy of the card holder’s driver’s license and state license requirements.
General contractors performing residential work over $10,000 must obtain a City business license. The general contractor must present a current Alabama Home Builders card and driver’s license to obtain a City business license. The City business license will be issued exactly how it appears on the contractor’s Home Builder’s card.
General contractors performing commercial work over $50,000 must obtain a City business license. The general contractor must present a current Alabama general contractor’s license in order to obtain his/her City business license. All sub-contractors under the general contractor must obtain a City business license as well.
Trades
All plumbers and gas fitters are required to obtain a City business license. The contractor must present a current Alabama Master Plumbers and/or Gas Fitters card along with a valid driver’s license. No licenses will be issued to journeymen.
All mechanical contractors are required to obtain a City business license and must present a current Alabama Heating and Air card along with a valid driver’s license.
All electricians must obtain a City business license. The contractor must present a current Alabama Master Electrician’s card along with a valid driver’s license. No licenses will be issued to journeymen.
Commercial Owners
Commercial owners permitting work over $50,000 are not required to obtain a City business license, however, all sub-contractors working under the commercial owner that are compensated over $50,000 are required to obtain the required City business license as well as provide verification of an Alabama general contractor’s license.
Homeowners
Homeowners are not required to obtain a City business license and may act as their own general contractor, however, any person performing work for an individual must obtain a sub-contractor’s City business license. All homeowners acting as their own general contractor performing work over $10,000 are required to sign a Home Builder License Exemption Form. This form must be signed by the homeowner and notarized.
