How Do I Qualify To Run For Office?
Qualfication for municipal office begins at 8 AM, Tuesday, June 10, 2025 and the last day/time to qualify is 5 PM, Tuesday, June 24, 2025. To qualify, bring the following document with you to avoid any delays or problems with your qualification. These are necessary:
- A fully completed Statement of Candidacy with a notarized signature of the candidate. If there is no notary, do not sign the document until you come to City Hall so that it may be signed in front of a notary.
- Payment of a $50.00 qualification fee pursuant to Ordinance 1826 (copy below) or a completed Indigent Affidavit (please note, campaign funds and personal funds should not be co-mingled so ensure that this payment is from your campaign account or cash so you can get a receipt to use for your campaign accounting purposes.)
- Confirmation number from submittal of your Statement of Economic interest. This document will have to be screened through the Ethics Commission so, to avoid any delays, please bring your conformation number with you when you qualify. Failure to complete the SEI in the alloted time AND be cleared by the Ethics Commission can result in the removal of your name from the ballot. This is important! The City has no discretion in this requirement.

- Statement of Candidacy and Indigent Affidavit – To be filed with the City Clerk between the dates of June 10, 2025 through June 24, 2025 at 5 PM local time.
- Statement of Economic Interest – Alabama Ethics Commission – It is important to file this SEI prior to qualification and bring a copy of the Confirmation Number for this filing at the time of qualifying Section 36-25-15 of the Code of Alabama, 1975, states that a candidate for municipal office MUST file a Statement of Economic Interest Form with the Alabama Ethics Commission not more than five days after the candidate files his or her qualifying papers with the appropriate election official. Nothing in this section shall be deemed to require a second filing of the person’s statement of economic interest if a current statement is on file with the Commission. Failure to file this form will result in the candidate’s name not appearing on the ballot. You can file your statement of interest form online at the above link
- AED SEI Online Form – this form is the online portal for filing the Statement of Economic Interest.
- Elected Officials Required Training: Beginning January 1, 2025, all elected officials must begin training in core curriculum offered by the Alabama League of Municipalities. Officials must complete 10 hours per year until they ear the basic CMO designation (40 hours). Following that designation, the official must complete a minimum of 5 hours per year. Fair Campaign Practices Act:
- FCPA candidate filing is done through an online portal on the Secretary of State website set up by the candidate. This is also the page to register a Principal Campaign Committee, PAC, etc.

Poll Worker/Poll Watcher Information:
- Relationships and Kindred Chart – Section 11-46-27, Code of Alabama, 1975, states no spouse or kindred of any candidate to the second degree, according to the civil law, shall be eligible to serve as an election official
- Poll Watcher Information – Alabama League of Municipalities and Alabama Code – NOTE: Poll watchers must be present at the beginning of the day and take an oath with the poll chief. If the poll watcher leaves, he/she might not be able to come back into the polls.
